IB Economics

Economics is a Social Science subject that examines how individuals, businesses, and governments allocate resources to meet needs and wants. The IB Economics Exam assesses students’ understanding of economic concepts and their ability to apply them using real-world scenarios, data analysis, and theoretical models.

IB Economics focuses on four core areas: microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and development economics, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of economic systems and global issues.

The assessment structure varies for Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL):

• SL Students: Take three papers over a total of 3 hours:

• Paper 1: Extended response questions (30%)

• Paper 2: Data response questions (40%)

• Internal Assessment: Portfolio of commentaries (30%)

• HL Students: Take three papers over a total of 4 hours - 30min.

• Paper 1: Extended response questions (20%)

• Paper 2: Data response questions (30%)

• Paper 3: Policy-based quantitative questions (30%)

• Internal Assessment: Portfolio of commentaries (20%)

A-Level Economics

Economics is a Social Science subject that explores how individuals, businesses, and governments make decisions about allocating scarce resources. The A-Level Economics Exam assesses students’ understanding of economic principles, their ability to analyze real-world scenarios, and their proficiency in applying theories, models, and data to solve problems.

A-Level Economics focuses on key areas such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the global economy, providing students with a well-rounded understanding of national and international economic issues.

The assessment structure typically includes:

Paper 1: Microeconomics, consisting of multiple-choice and structured response questions.
Paper 2: Macroeconomics, with data response and essay-style questions.
Paper 3: A synoptic paper covering both microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts, focusing on critical thinking and application.

The syllabus and exam duration vary by examination board (e.g., CIE, Edexcel), but all are designed to equip students with analytical, problem-solving, and evaluative skills necessary for success in both academics and real-world economics.

AP Microeconomics

Economics is a Social Science subject that focuses on the study of the decisions made by individuals, households, and firms within an economy. The exam takes place in May each year and lasts for 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Section I: Consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, carrying two-thirds of the total weight, and is allotted 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Section II: Contains three free-response questions, carrying one-third of the total weight, with a duration of 1 hour.

Students are allowed to use a four-function calculator during the exam.

AP Macroeconomics
